Chris Stauffer, MD

Dr. Stauffer is a dual board-certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Physician-Scientist at the Portland Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. He attended medical school at OHSU, Adult Psychiatry Residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and completed an Advanced Neuroscience Research Fellowship at the San Francisco VA. He is the recipient of a Veterans Affairs Clinical Science Career Development Award. Dr. Stauffer’s research combines social psychopharmacology - such as oxytocin, MDMA, and psilocybin - with psychotherapy to treat psychiatric disorders. He has worked as Sub-Investigator, Study Physician, and Study Therapist for Phase 2 (NCT03282123) and Phase 3 (NCT03537014) trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD and Co-Investigator and Study Therapist for a trial of psilocybin-assisted group therapy for demoralization in long-term AIDS survivors (NCT02950467). He has also been Principal Investigator for several clinical trials using intranasal oxytocin as an intervention for substance use disorders, including for Veterans with co-occurring opioid and stimulant use disorder (NCT03016598) and combined with group therapy for methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men (NCT02881177). Currently, Dr. Stauffer is Principal Investigator of a clinical trial of psilocybin-assisted therapy for Veterans with methamphetamine use disorder and the first clinical trial of MDMA-assisted group therapy for Veterans with PTSD. Additionally, Dr. Stauffer sits on the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board research subcommittee, is a Clinical Supervisor for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, serves as mentor for the Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research certificate program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and is core faculty for the Integrative Psychiatry Institute’s Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Training.
